Dear Friend,

Visually Impaired Persons of Suffolk (VIPS) in operation since 2016 is an organization that helps visually- and hearing-impaired people become active members in their communities. One way we accomplish this is by providing grants that assist visually- and hearing-impaired persons or the organizations designed to help them. For the first grant(s) awarded in 2022, VIPS has decided to honor its former chairman, Donald Gomez.

Donald Gomez died in 2021. A diabetic, Donald understood at a personal level the necessity of exercise for those living with diabetes and, more specifically, blindness caused by diabetes. For exercise, Donald walked. With his wife by his side, Donald and his guide dog walked a half mile to a mile every day. They walked around the block and throughout his neighborhood. From time to time, Donald would walk about 5 blocks to and from Helen Keller Services for the Blind in Ronkonkoma. Walking was his exercise of choice; he enjoyed it. This understanding of good health and well-being at this stage in his life was reflected in his genuine concerned for the health and well-being of others. VIPS will honor that concern with the Donald Gomez Grant.

The Donald Gomez Grant will be awarded to a person or persons with a hearing or visual impairment whose road to health and well-being requires regular physical activity or physical therapy delivered through an organization such as the YMCA or regular meditation or mindfulness training delivered through a karate school, yoga studio or similar business.

Additionally, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to an organization of VIPS’ choosing that is committed to assisting visually- or hearing-impaired persons, researching causes of blindness or hearing loss, or eradicating blindness or hearing loss. In the past, Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation and Third Eye Insight have been recipients of VIPS donations.

Thank you so very much for your donation of any size to the inaugural Donald Gomez Gran Please make checks payable to Visually Impaired Persons of Suffolk.
